Justice Dvno Biography
So let me get this straight. You don't condone the Republican and Loyalist violence of the past, but you do condone this incident, which you yourself say is a holdover from that very same past?
As far as the police not doing anything: first of all, policing in Northern Ireland is a very different kettle of fish than elsewhere in the UK. The Peace is still getting settled in: the cops can't just go in mob-handed and expect no backlash, especially in sectarianism-plagued areas like the one this incident took place in.
Secondly, as I understand it the UDA - the recognized vigilante enforcer group in the area - actually advised the locals to go to the police; the locals ignored their advice; and took their own action instead. Now how, exactly, were the police supposed to act on something they hadn't had a complaint about?
Thirdly, the fact that six out of every seven callers to a radio programme supported the vigilantes in no way validates what they did. You know as well as I do, if you've listened to many of these phone-in shows for more than a few minutes, that the intellectual calibre of most callers is somewhere between that of a hamster and a walnut.
